So why would ScanMed develop such a Ankle specific device when knee/foot coils, ski-boot coils for ankle, feet and lower leg imaging coils exist? The answer is simple: Significantly improved image quality to obtain the highest possible resolution in this critical joint and Achilles tendon. This is done by optimizing antenna (element) geometries in shape, size, and number to focus their sensitivity profiles on these specific anatomies. It is all about element density, the number of elements specifically adjacent to the desired anatomy. All 8 of the elements are focused on the region of the ankle compared to all other designs where 8 or 16 elements are covering foot, ankle, and lower leg thereby reducing the number of elements that contribute to the signal from the ankle.
